For the past few years, I’ve been trying to go green.
That means switching up my diet, cleaning supplies, makeup products — anything with chemical ingredients, I now try to get as clean as possible.
Next up on my switch list was finding the best natural, organic shampoo that actually works.
Are They Truly Organic?
It can be hard to find products that are genuinely organic and not just branded that way. Due to “a lack of FDA regulation, beauty brands can label their products with terms like ‘organic’ or ‘natural,’ even if the ingredients list is actually filled with questionable ingredients like parabens or formaldehyde releasers,” according to Cosmopolitan.
It’s super shady that products can be marketed as “natural” when they’re anything but — “a product can contain mostly chemical ingredients and only one plant-based ingredient, yet still list itself as natural.”
You have to check the ingredients and if a beauty product is “certified as organic by organizations like ECOCERT, The Soil Association, COSMOS, and the USDA — or, if it’s been certified by the EWG or NATRUE — you can probably trust that it’s natural.”
I had no idea, so armed with this new info, I went searching for some new suds for my mane. These are my top three of the best natural shampoos out there:
True Botanical Nourishing Shampoo
The best natural shampoo I tried was the True Botanical Nourishing Shampoo — there’s a reason Olivia Wilde loves this brand.
My main concern when going organic was the lather factor. Some of the green shampoos don’t foam up, and – although this isn’t necessarily true — I feel like my hair isn’t clean if it’s not full of sudsy bubbles.
It prides itself as a “hypoallergenic, antioxidant-packed, hydrating shampoo with a luxurious lather that cleans without stripping, leaving your hair and scalp hydrated and nourished — formulated for all hair types.”
And it smells AMAZING — citrusy and floral without being overpowering. I love this shampoo and highly recommend checking it out!
Prose
Coming in at number two (not too shabby) is Prose.
This line is different — you answer a ton of questions about your hair, diet, exercise, and they recommend a hair care regimen tailored specifically for you.
My questionnaire gave me a natural shampoo billed as a “gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that won’t strip hair of moisture and protects against breakage.”
You can pick your fragrance, and I opted for Corsica, with notes of Anjou Pear, Peony, and Cedar Wood. It smells delicious and the only reason it’s not my number one is that its lather was not luxurious.
I absolutely love that they customize products for your hair type, and even though it’s pricey if you buy the conditioner, supplements and hair mask, if you can afford to splurge, treat yourself!
Wildland Organics The Super Bar
Third place goes to Wildland Organics The Super Bar, an all-in-one hair, body, and shave bar.
Yes, a bar. I was wary about it not being in liquid form, but was pleasantly surprised at how well it performed! Lather factor was up there, and since it doubles as soap, it reduces waste, making it a truly green alternative.
I wasn’t wild about the smell — it’s not bad by any means, just different from the scents I usually gravitate toward.
Honorable Mentions
My last four choices (in no particular order) are all solid shampoos, but I preferred the top three.
Chamomile Shampoo
The Chamomile Shampoo is an all-natural option for oily hair (yeah, my hair is fine so it gets oily, gross) and has aloe vera gel, lavender, and chamomile oil that “works to balance oil and create bright, shiny hair.”
Go Easy Shampoo
Ursa Major’s Go Easy Shampoo is a no-frills, “luxurious, lightly-conditioning daily shampoo for healthy, manageable hair.”
This means you can skip a step (yay!) because it contains a conditioner, and I’m always happy to cut a step in my routine.
TIP: If you have fine hair that knots easily, like I do, add a leave-in conditioner as well, otherwise you’ll spend the time you skipped in the shower detangling your hair.
Feed Your Volume Shampoo (Waitlisted)
Founded by Israeli hairstylist Mordechai Alvow, this brand is all about “raising your hair’s volume and lowering your carbon footprint with this luxurious, naturally foaming shampoo” and I can attest that its claims to plump up fine hair’s volume are true.
