You don’t need to wait until Dec. 25 is almost upon you to get in the holiday spirit. You can start right now by treating yourself to a binge sesh of the best Christmas movies.

Now, when we say “best,” we don’t mean any of those Hallmark or Netflix romance flicks. They are just not our goodie bags, but no offense to anyone who finds joy watching them!

We are talking about classic Christmas movies — films, if you like. Some of these may be a little off the traditional beaten path, but they are our favorites to binge and help us usher in the holiday mood.

So grab your best cozy blanket, heat up some eggnog (or don’t, that shit is not for everyone), and fire up one or all of these best Christmas movies!

Best Christmas Movies

A Christmas Story

It was a very good year, 1983, as it gave us a cult gem called A Christmas Story. It is a classic holiday movie because it is both sweetly nostalgic and darkly funny. It gave us the line “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid” and continues to give – Peter Billingsley just released a sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas, that is available to stream on HBOMax!

Better Watch Out

This entry goes out to all of the thriller junkies – buckle up, because it is a wild, twisted ride on Santa’s sleigh. Better Watch Out is an endearingly eerie Christmas horror thriller that thrives on the chemistry of its young lead cast.

While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping is made entirely from familiar elements, but Sandra Bullock’s delightful performance gives formula a good name.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas respects a great holiday story and has justifiably become a Christmas tradition thanks to its superb cast.

Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas

Do you like Jim Henson? Of course you do, so add Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas to your queue if you’ve somehow missed out on this delightful Muppet holiday romp.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

In this stop-motion animagic version of the classic Christmas story, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer meets an abominable snowman named Bumbles (which is my favorite character of all time). And that’s just a small part of the drama in this beloved holiday movie.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Even though National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation isn’t the most well-made comedy, it has enough laughs and seasonal spirit to be a hilarious holiday treat.

Home Alone

Despite the terrible parenting, Home Alone continues to be an entertaining Christmas movie to watch again and again.

The Family Stone

The Family Stone is a Christmas movie that works despite its flaws because of its charming ensemble cast. It showcases the reality that both good and bad family vibes can coexist during stressful holidays.

Toys

Toys making this list is controversial because NO ONE likes this movie but me. For some reason, this absurd, overblown Robin Williams fantasy flick brings me to tears every time. It may be due to the gorgeous theme song, ‘The Closing Of The Year by Wendy and Lisa featuring Seal.
