Bunions are more common than you think. If you are not aware of what these painful feet demons are, lucky you! But as I have them and so do a third of U.S. adults, allow me to enlighten you.
Bunions are bony lumps near the base of the big toe and can be caused by heredity, years of wearing poorly-fitted shoes or heels, and inflammatory disorders. They’re not dangerous, but wooo boy, they can hurt! And they can make choosing the right shoes difficult.
“A bunion, also known as hallux abducto valgus, represents the progressive dislocation of the big toe towards the lesser toes,” says Ray McClanahan, owner of Northwest Foot & Ankle and Andrew Wojciechowski. “The ‘bump’ of the bunion is not often a growth of bone, but rather the exposed first metatarsal head, as the big toe points towards the second toe.”
Podiatrists gave Oprah Daily the following recommendations for the best shoes for bunions:
-
Pick shoes with a wide toe box: A wide toe box will help keep the bunion deformity from being pressed even further.
-
Determine the shape of the toe box: Oldani says that shoes with a round toe box that doesn’t get smaller near the toes are the best for bunions.
-
Consider the shoe material: Find shoes that will mold to the bunion. “Soft leather or a pliable synthetic material like neoprene are great options,” said Oldani.
