Niecy Nash and wife, Jessica Betts, have made history.
Nash says it better, actually. She says they’ve made “H E R S T O R Y.” The couple graced the cover of the latest edition of Essence, making them the first same-sex couple ever to do so.
The award-winning actress, comedian, and TV host posted the beautiful cover of the monthly magazine’s March/April 2022 “Black Women in Hollywood” issue on Instagram.

“Making H E R S T O R Y,” wrote Nash, whose real name is Carol Denise Betts. “Thank you @essence for choosing The Betts as your FIRST same-sex couple to cover (your) magazine!”
In another post on IG, Nash shared a behind-the-scenes video with clips of the couple from the shoot.
Nash wrote, “All Betts are off when Black Love is on the forefront. #rp@essence. Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts stun on our March/April Cover. When you find ‘A Love Like This’ it keeps faith alive of what true love means. This Happily Ever Story is one for the books and barriers.”

Since 1970, Essence has been a force for Black women – the monthly magazine covers fashion, beauty, entertainment, lifestyle, and culture. In a press release, the magazine characterized the issue featuring Nash and Betts as “Honoring breakthrough moments of even more Black women in every area of their lives.”
In the interview with Essence, Nash and Betts talked about their love story and how their partnership progressed into wedding vows.
“The least of my attraction is gender,” Nash told Essence. “What I was and am still attracted to is Jessica’s soul. She was the most beautiful soul I had ever met in my life. Now that I’ve experienced it, I can’t imagine going through life without it,” she said.
