Yep, the dark circles under my eyes are a pain. Just noticing them when I look in the mirror makes me feel even more tired. When I look a friend or loved one in the eye, it’s difficult not to notice dark circles. We all use concealer to try to cover up the worst of it, but we often completely misunderstand why we have dark circles and what we can do about them.
Dark circles are frustrating. What really causes them? Why do I get them even when I feel energized? For me, I know that others in my family have the same issue, and I also know it’s gotten more noticeable as I get older. If I was a person of color, that would likely be a factor as well.

I also know that so many other factors in my life really do affect my dark circles. Beyond the lack of sleep, there are allergies, sun exposure, anemia, and even eczema. I can (and should) sleep more, take allergy meds, and wear sunscreen.
We can all do more to help reduce and prevent those dark circles, though. A big part of the solution comes down to actually doing what doctors and researchers have been telling us to do for years – for starters, we need to eat more fruits and vegetables. To prevent under-eye circles, there are a few key ones that can help.

Blueberries, blackberries, and even black currants are dark berries that have anthocyanin, an antioxidant that improves blood flow specifically to your eye. It also works to supply oxygen to the tissues in the area around your eye.
So, now you know which fruits and vegetables will help, but you should also consider your options for when they’re out of season or unavailable. These vitamins and supplements help to treat deficiencies that are likely causing those dark circles, but they offer lots of other important health benefits too.
