Who doesn’t love candles? Not anyone I’ve come across.
But for a long time, we’ve had somewhat limited options when it comes to the burning wax aromas — gravitating toward Yankee Candle or Bath & Body Works.
And those are fine, but they’re mostly geared toward feminine scents.
Until Boy Smells candles burst onto the scene.

I’m not exaggerating when I say burst — the indie brand has quickly become beloved for its unique, genderless candles and fragrances. The unisex candles come in gorgeous tumblers and in a wide array of unique scents.
Boy Smells founders Matthew Herman and David Kien wanted to create products that are fluid and inclusive because limiting fragrance to gender is an outdated concept. The company began in 2015 as an experiment in candle-making in the Los Angeles kitchen of the co-founders and real-life partners.

Herman and Kien – both fashion veterans who worked in design (Herman) and product development (Kien) – began by making the things they’d want to use on a daily basis, products that were fluid and essential, according to the Boy Smells site.
“We wanted to have products that were embracing masculine and feminine simultaneously in a simple and straight-forward way that wasn’t overtly targeted to one gender,” says co-founder Matthew Herman. “It’s a permission to harness your power from wherever you want it.”

Candles
Best Buds Votive Set
This set contains:

Cashmere Kush Votive Candle (3 oz.): featuring notes of cannabis flower, cashmere wood, white amber, vetiver, tulip and powdery musk.

Kush Votive Candle (3 oz.): featuring notes of cannabis, suede, white musk, tulip and amber.

Cameo
This candle is a spicy combination of crystallized ginger, vanilla, and rose. It’s a coconut and beeswax blend with braided cotton wick in a glossy black glass tumbler, and it burns for roughly 50 hours.
Ash
The notes of this candle are firewood, smoke, charcoal, palo santo, and hay. The lingering accord of bright juniper berry rounds out this modern, smoky scent.
Cedar, Hinoki And St. Al Votive Set
For wood lovers only, this votive set features warm, vibrant woody favorites in petite 3oz versions of the standard 8.5oz candles.

This one is a Nordstrom-exclusive, limited-edition candle created with Kacey Musgraves, named after the opening track from her fourth studio album.
Musgraves and Boy Smells collabed to create a candle that “perfectly captures the smells and visual vibrancy that one hears in the song.”
LES
This scent is inspired by NYC’s Lower East Side and has notes of blackcurrant, peach blossom, jasmine rice, Asian pear, coconut, cardamom, and white cedar.
Petal
A floral-scented candle with magnolia, night-blooming tuberose, and purple geranium. Other notes include golden amber and exotic musk to keep the scent grounded.
Fragrances
Violet Ends Genderful Fine Fragrance
This fragrance is described as warm and spicy — a vibrant violet scent in a storm of smoked papyrus and tobacco leaves.

Tantrum Genderful Fine Fragrance
