Headboards are your room’s largest accessory. They dress up your bed, which is — if done right — your bedroom’s focal point.
Your headboard should reflect who you are. Just because you hear that upholstering is elegant doesn’t mean that you should have one, or that minimalism should have a space in your maximalist personality.
So, which one should you choose? I can’t answer that. I can, however, present you with options to match your every desire. Try metal before committing to rattan, or customize panels until you fall in love with patterns. Basically: You do you, honey.

Best Overall: Leisha Upholstered Panel Headboard
Whether you’re the type to rest your pillow on it, lean back while you read a book, or a little bit of both, your headboard should be comfy. This paneled one is made with a soft polyester-linen blend fabric, and it has extra foam filling perfect for leaning back.
Best Storage: Prepac Sonoma Bookcase Headboard
My nightstands are tiny, and I’m a liiiitle bit of a hoarder. This headboard has two large shelves, three small cubbies, and a center console to hold everything together. Fit books and mugs in the large shelves, pens and electronics in the cubbies, and any other miscellaneous items in the console.
Most Affordable: Rest Haven Upholstered Square Tufted Headboard with Two Dual USB Ports
It may be under $100, but this headboard has 4.1 stars out of 156 reviews. It features your classic tuft design, but the coolest part is the dual USB charging ports — one on each side, so your partner can charge their phone, too.
Best Splurge: Lokon Cane Headboard
Here’s why you shouldn’t give this headboard an immediate “no” because of the price: It’s handcrafted in Indonesia using fair-trade practices, so you’re supporting an ethical movement. Aesthetically, the woven natural rattan and cane come together in an intricate design that integrates textural interest.
Best Upholstered: Bernardsville Upholstered Solid Wood Panel Headboard (Set of 4)
This headboard is buildable — choose one panel to lean back on, or tile them to the ceiling. Aside from being totally customizable, it also features 98% sound absorption, so guests won’t hear you snoring through the shared wall.
Best Faux Leather: Premier Customizable Upholstered Wall Headboard Panels
If you want to add some edge to your bed (which, hey, that’s sexy of you), these faux leather panels are noise-reducing and fully customizable. They can be mounted vertically or horizontally…or both, because only you make the rules in your bedroom.
Best Wood: The Carolina Headboard
If you’re going to have a wooden headboard, make sure it’s sustainably sourced. The Carolina Headboard is a simple piece, with its wood coming directly from Chicago. What makes it gorgeous: Each piece of wood has its own unique variation, and you can choose from nine finishes, such as Deadwood, Beachwood, or Montana Gray.
Best Metal: Porch & Den Elemar Grey Metal Headboard
It doesn’t have to be bold to make a statement. Diagonal poles sprout from the center of this headboard to create sleek, reaching lines in this curved frame, with a pewter finish adding an industrial-yet-modern feel.
Best Rattan: Java Rattan Headboard
Go boho, you know? This rattan headboard is also from The Citizenry, so you can rest assured that it’s fair-trade from Indonesia. It’s a quirky take on your typical headboard, with both horizontal and vertical lines. Tight space contrasts openness, and locally-sourced Manau rattan radiates warmth.
Best Tufted: iNSPIRE Q® Hatton Hill Button Tufted Wingback Headboard
I spent a weekend in Vegas, and our suite’s California King Bed had a tufted headboard similar to this one. It was the comfiest. Headboard. Ever. iNSPIRE Q’s is upholstered in linen fabric, adding softness to its elegant tufting design. It wraps around and hugs the sides of the bed, offering a feeling of support and seclusion.
Best Patterned: Catie Upholstered Panel Headboard
I know, it’s probably not the first thing you think of. But adding a pattern to your headboard is an easy way to make a statement without shelling out on extra decor or bedsheets. On days when you’re sleeping with plain white sheets, this headboard will bring your bedroom to life.
Best Minimalist: Solid Wood Panel Headboard
Instead of using standard cherry wood, choose different shades for interest. This one is made from thick wood panels that can be lined horizontally or pieced together like a puzzle. It’s a bit like bringing the beach to your bed, minus the sand.
Best Maximalist: Deco Sun Headboard
It’s the sun! In your room! Right behind your bed! There’s nothing subtle about this, and that’s why I love it so much. Made from wood with a metallic finish, you’ll wake up to the rays every morning. The detail in the etching is an underrated aspect, but one to be admired.
