When was the last time you gave your scalp some love? I’m not talking about using that new shampoo that brushes your hair a little more gently – I’m talking taking your scalp on a date, feeding it right, maybe treating it to a little massage kind of love.
So many people overlook their scalp when they’re focusing on hair care, and that’s totally understandable! The scalp has been slept on. Honestly, the only time I’ve really focused on scalp care is when I had to choose between Mane ‘N’ Tail or Head and Shoulders. But there are so many more ways that you can and should be looking out for your scalp. Here are some products and tips for you and your hard-working scalp!
What Happens When You Don’t Take Care Of Your Scalp?

Some bad things. All the skin on your body is different because it serves a different purpose. The cool thing about the scalp is that it doesn’t wrinkle with age like your face, but the bad thing is that it loses its ability to maintain healthy follicles. So basically, you might be losing some hair if you don’t properly take care of your scalp. Scary. Also, the scalp ages six times faster than the skin on your face. At least it doesn’t show, right?! But again, this means your hair will start to thin out because of the aging process. The scalp is so susceptible to aging because it’s the part of the body that gets the most direct sunlight exposure. Think of your scalp like the soil for your hair. You need to properly hydrate and feed the soil in order for your hair to grow!
I Shampoo, Is That Enough?
Short answer: it’s a great start. Part of taking care of your scalp obviously needs to be basic cleaning. Shampoo helps remove the debris and dirt from your hair and scalp. Brushing your hair also helps a lot when you’re cleaning up. This cleaning process also allows for your hair follicles to not be blocked by the gross stuff and be able to grow!
But there’s so much more you need to be doing for your precious head.
Tips For Scalp Care
1. Brush your hair one hundred times. I’m getting A Little Princess flashbacks. But it’s actually true! Ted Gibson says that brushing “helps to distribute your own natural oils throughout your hair and also stimulate the scalp.”
2. Wash your hair a little less often. While maintaining a clean scalp is super important, it’s also important for your hair to maintain those nutrients it naturally builds up. If you’re constantly washing your hair, you’re also washing away those nutrients! Your hair may feel greasy at the beginning, but it’s only temporary.
3. Avoid dry shampoo. I know, this is the worst thing I could have told you. But maybe take a break from dry shampoo for a few weeks. The powdery substance causes more buildup on the scalp and doesn’t allow your hair to grow in the way it needs to.
4. Supplements, baby. I swear, there’s a vitamin for everything. Start scanning your local grocery shelves for supplements that contain biotin, silica, vitamins B, C, and E, iron, and omega-3. These vitamins will help all of your beauty routines, not just your hair! You can shop our recommendations below!
5. You are what you eat. Just like supplements can help you, getting a proper mixture of foods can also help your scalp. Add tons of fish into your diet to boost that omega-3. You can also add iron rich foods to help your scalp as well if you’re not much of a fish person.
