Having three cats in the house is an adventure. And before you call me a crazy cat lady, I just want to put out there that only one of them is mine — the others belong to my two roommates. (I am a bit of a cat lady, though.)
Don’t get me wrong, I freaking love all our cats. They imbue life into our home. They’re insanely loud and obnoxious and they do the dumbest, most entertaining things. But having three cats can get a little…messy. They definitely eat each other’s food and get into things they shouldn’t be in, and they for sure use each other’s litter boxes.
I wanted to make my litter maintenance life a little easier, so I scoured the market for the best litter-related products out there to test them out and see what I think. I tried Pretty Litter, the Litter Genie, and the Litter Robot. Keep reading to see what I thought!

I am obsessed with this litter box. Obsessed is actually an understatement — I’m enamored with it. In love with it? This might be love. We’ve only known each other for about a month, but things could definitely be heading in that direction.
First off, this litter box is ~aesthetic~. It looks like an ultra cool mini spaceship or something. I have mine in my bedroom and it’s honestly not unseemly at all, because you would never guess it’s a litter box. Second, odor control + never needing to scoop? Yes, please! This is the hands-off litter experience you’ve been waiting for. Third, I say honestly and without an ounce of shame that I love watching this thing cycle. I get really excited about automated gadgets and things (yes, I have the enthusiasm of a child on occasion) and this is so fun to watch! The cats love watching it, too — every time they hear it start a cycle, they take turns literally sticking their heads inside to see what’s happening.
I expected my cats to be freaked out by this but they weren’t at all. It’s recommended that you leave it off for a day or two and let the cats get used to it, and that’s definitely the way to go. But I only needed to leave mine off for a couple hours. I got all the cats in front of it and sat with them as I let it cycle a couple of times (you can make it cycle manually) and they just watched it with me. So they really were never afraid of it and they took to it immediately!

Pretty Litter
So I do have mixed reviews for this product, but hear me out! I knew when I got Pretty Litter that I’d have to keep a close eye on it in order for it to be useful, because all 3 cats use my litter box. The way Pretty Litter works is that the color of the litter changes after your cat pees in it (depending on the pH levels of the urine), and the color of the litter will indicate if your cat has health problems that need addressed. Pretty Litter still worked for me — once I noticed that someone’s urine was too alkaline, I just had to check it after every cat used it to see which cat needed attention. So keep that in mind if you have multiple cats — it works still but just requires some extra attention.
Other than that, my favorite thing about this litter was that it seriously had no dust. None. I hate litter dust — it seems to get on everything and it just feels dirty. So this was a huge selling point for me. It also did a pretty good job at masking odors, but I’d still get some pretty strong urine smells now and then. Nothing major, though! And it’s worth mentioning that you can totally use this in the Litter Robot, even though the Litter Robot says it needs clumping litter. Pretty Litter works just fine.
Litter Genie
I’ve had a Litter Genie ever since I got my cat as a kitten, and I don’t know how I could have survived without it (until I got the Litter Robot, that is). The litter genie is basically a diaper genie but for cats — you scoop the litter, open the lid, dump the litter in, and slide out a little separator that allows the litter to go into the bottom compartment. Zero smell issue, super easy cleanup, the refills and the actual unit are ultra-cheap, and it will cut way back on the amount of times you have to take litter out to the trash can. A huge win if you don’t have this already!
