Review: ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’ Is Back And Better Than Ever

Brace yourselves, Star Wars fans!!! Obi Wan Kenobi is back, and honestly, better than ever! Disney Plus just released its latest installment of their Star Wars original series, and this one is all about Obi Wan Kenobi. Written by Joby Harold and directed by Deborah Chow, this six-episode series picks up 10 years after the fall of the Republic, and the Jedi are all but extinct. It starts up a decade after we last left this part of the story in Episode 3, “Revenge of the Sith.”

Ben Kenobi, or “Obi Wan Kenobi,” has decided to stay on the planet of Tatooine to watch over young Luke Skywalker from afar as his aunt and uncle raise him as their own. He and his twin sister, Leia, were separated at birth after their mother died in labor. Leia is being raised by a famous senator on a nearby planet, and raised in privilege at that. Their father, Anakin Skywalker, was to be the greatest Jedi who ever lived, and Obi Wan Kenobi’s apprentice, but turned to the dark side and became who we know as Darth Vader.

The series takes off just as Vader comes to be, but Obi Wan is still under the impression that he died during their epic last battle in Episode 3. You will meet some new characters during the series and also be introduced to some characters you’re already very familiar with (hello, Princess Leia as a kid). No matter your age or relationship with Star Wars, you can’t help but fall in love with this show.  There is an obvious gap in the storytelling of Star Wars and to be able to live in a time where they can finish filling in that story gap in such a fun but familiar way, I couldn’t get enough of!

Do you have to have seen all of the Star Wars in order to enjoy it? No, I don’t believe so. In the beginning of the first episode, they do a good job of summarizing the plot beforehand in a 2-4 minute segment, so you can get a general idea of what happened to lead up to the show. I highly recommend watching Star Wars episodes 1-3, if you have time beforehand, so the characters make even more sense.

Kenobi certainly caters to the Star Wars fan at heart, making references to older films as well as familiar characters. In the first week, Disney Plus released two of the six scheduled episodes, giving us a chance to really get a feel of what the show is about. Although a bit slower than some of its other Star Wars show counterparts, Kenobi is so rich in Star Wars history, it’s bound to be a hit! I’ve watched both episodes, and I did find myself a bit bored at times. The first episode did feel a bit dragged out with lots of slow moments and repetitiveness. The second episode starts to build the show’s momentum with a bit more action and humor to it. My favorite part of the show is the villainous Jedi hunters who have been hired by Vader to eliminate every Jedi who exists. They’re cunning and intimidating, much like the dark side.

I’m really excited to see where this series goes and if it has the momentum to carry into another season. We never know with Disney Plus which series are limited and which are up for another season, and it isn’t always based on what’s most popular. WandaVision was one of their most popular limited series, and there was and still is no talk of a season two. Depending on how deep they go into the timeline, and how they plan on wrapping up episode six, we will get a good idea if there is more Obi Wan on the horizon. Being the biggest Star Wars nerd I know, I hope they carry this story on as long as possible.

My final verdict for this new series would be to definitely give it a watch, but understand the pace of the first episode is a bit slow. So grab a bucket of popcorn and get ready to travel to a galaxy far, far away! You won’t be disappointed.
