This Is How Nutrafol Drastically Improved My Hair Health

Years ago I went through a significant illness that made my hair fall out at an alarming rate.

I have always shed hair quite a bit, but this time it felt like my hair was thinning and I panicked. I tried some shampoos made for hair thinning and loss and started taking all sorts of hair vitamins. Thankfully, once my health stabilized, so did my hair loss.
But now, as I am aging I’ve noticed my hair is thinner than I would like. It could be due to years of wearing extensions or coloring my hair. Or it could just be a symptom of perimenopause. I don’t think women expect to experience hair thinning at mid-age, that’s something we attribute to men’s aging, but it’s actually very common after age 45. Whatever the cause, I felt like I wanted to go back to a supplement routine that would counteract some of the damage. When I looked into all the options available, I decided to try Nutrafol.

What is Nutrafol exactly?

Nutrafol comes in 3 varieties, a general one for women, a general one for men and then one for women at any of the stages of menopause (Women’s Balance). You take 4 capsules per day and a 30 day supply costs $88. The proprietary supplement blend is meant to counteract some of the causes of hair loss and thinning. This is meant to improve thinning, promote new hair growth and increase the thickness of hair.

The Main Ingredients

Marine collagen (the building blocks of hair, skin and nails) — you can read all about our thoughts on collagen HERE, ashwagandha (this Ayurvedic herb decreases the stress hormone cortisol), saw palmetto (this supplement prevents testosterone from turning into DHT), curcurmin (an anti-inflammatory), and tocotrienols (plant based Vitamin E). There are other vitamins and minerals included as well (biotin, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Zinc to name a few), but these are the main active ingredients. Each works independently to combat the most common causes of hair thinning and loss.

The Improvements

I elected to take the Nutrafol Women’s Balance version since I am in my mid 40’s, and I have been taking it for almost a year. I can say that I have seen many positive improvements in my hair since starting the supplement. Not just that, but I also noticed some weight loss (maybe due to reduced cortisol levels? I’m not sure), and an overall reduction in some of my perimenopause symptoms. The Women’s Balance version also contains maca and astaxanthin which I was already taking to counteract some of the effects of aging on the skin and to support balanced hormone levels, so for me this version made the most sense and also cut down on the number of supplements I needed to take each day by combining them.

You really need to take this supplement for several months before you see a noticeable result, so it’s a time and financial commitment. But if, like me, you are self conscious about thinning hair or you’d like to see an improvement in overall hair thickness — this product is definitely worth adding to your daily routine. Don’t forget you should always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement.
