I’m getting to that oh-so-lovely age of face wrinkles.
Now, I can’t complain too much because my skin still looks pretty good, BUT the area around my eyes is inching into crepe paper territory. And I’m extremely unhappy about it.
Why not get Botox, you may ask? Well, for one, I go to extraordinary lengths to avoid unnecessary needles. Secondly, if those needles are going anywhere near my eyeballs, fuck that.
One day, I was on the phone with my friend, Morgan, and there was a buzzing noise, which, for a split second, I thought was a vibrator (thank god I didn’t ask her that).
“What’s that buzzing noise?” I asked. “Is there a buzzing noise or am I losing it?”
Morgan said, “I’m electrocuting my wrinkles.”
She explained that her friend, Chloe, told her about this device that uses electronic pulses to zap wrinkles. All I needed to hear was “zap wrinkles” and I, immediately, bought a NuFACE.

Anxiously awaiting the product that promised to lessen the appearance of my crepe-y crow’s feet, I read up on what it does.
The NuFACE uses microcurrents to “Re-energize your skin’s natural current as it slows with age. This boost of energy travels beyond the surface of the skin to help address signs of aging, instantly, and over time.”
It’s said to tone and help the appearance of sagging or crepey skin, which is what I want and need. Other benefits include firming to improve skin’s strength; contouring to help improve the definition of facial features; and smoothing to improve the look of fine lines, wrinkles, and dimples. It can leave my one cheek dimple alone, thank you very much. But everything else sounded perfect.
After a long 3 weeks (thank you, slow supply chain) my NuFACE arrived and I tore open the box like a kid on Christmas. I got the NuFACE Trinity® Starter Kit, which includes the device, charger, and Hydrating Leave-On Gel Activator, “A must-have to ensure the microcurrent is conducted down to the facial muscle.”
I charged it up and prepped my face with the “must-have” gel activator and got to work. You’re supposed to use it for 5 minutes, which feels like an eternity when you’re microcurrent-ing delicate areas of your face, so my first time ended after 3 minutes.
Not gonna lie, it felt weird, and if you apply too much pressure, it’s slightly uncomfortable (you’re not supposed to use a lot of pressure – I was overzealous).
I also saw flashing lights while using it, which freaked me out. But on their FAQ page, they say this is normal, explaining “A common reaction is a perception of flashing lights during your NuFACE treatment, resulting from the stimulation of the optic nerve. If you notice this condition constantly and when not using your NuFACE device, please consult your doctor.”
Uh, I definitely saw pinpoints of light — don’t gaslight me, NuFACE.
My first time didn’t deter me and I was back at it the next day. Only this time, I applied a thicker coat of the gel, used less pressure, and it was a much better experience. I made it the entire 5 minutes and was quite pleased with myself for sticking it out.
I’ve been using it for about a month and my skin definitely looks tighter after a session — as for long term results, I can’t say yet. But I’m really pleasantly surprised with the short term results, so I give the NuFACE an enthusiastic thumbs up.
So, if you are not ready to pull the trigger on fillers or Botox just yet, I’d recommend this stopgap — it’s worth the price. They have several different options and skin care products, but pay attention to what you choose because some attachments are sold separately!
One bit of advice: the gel activator comes in a small tube, so it doesn’t last long. After 2 weeks of treatments, I had to order another, so consider that when ordering.
