This app is the OG of meditation, and it’s for good reason: Calm will bring you to the ultimate place of zen. Open up the app and you’ll immediately be introduced to calming nature sounds, setting the scene for its daily meditation. You can also go through and find a guided meditation that appeals to you and your time constraints.

“Gentle” is the first word that comes to mind with Headspace. Both beginners and professionals (and everyone in between) of meditation will enjoy this app, because their slogan is “Mindfulness for Everyone.” They have all kinds of different practices, ranging from guided breathing exercises to body scans. Try a 3-minute session for a quick refocusing or sleep music to drift off to.
This app is ideal for those just entering the world of meditation. The meditation guides are thorough, and they have different teachers, so you can find one to best suit your needs. On top of this, you have access to experts who can help answer questions and guide you as questions arise. Learning through relaxing is perfect for those questioning whether meditation is for them.
Branding themselves as “The Best Meditation App for Busy People,” this app is perfect for those who are constantly on-the-go. Catch a quick morning meditation while on the bus, or a midday zen sesh during your lunch break. Choose what’s stressing you out — eating problems, lack of sleep, time management, etc. — and find a session geared toward easing that specific stressor.
Previously called Stop, Breathe, and Think, MyLife is tailored to how you feel. Answer a quick questionnaire at the beginning about your physical, mental, and emotional health, and the app will suggest meditative exercises to ease any stress or negativity. If you’re running low on time, rejoice: these guides are short and sweet, perfect for those looking to catch a quick moment to themselves.
The Unplug app gives you the chance to find what works for you. There is a wide library of instructors available, so try out a few classes from different teachers before settling on the few that help you get in the right mental zone. The app also uses video rather than just audio, giving you a more in-person and personal feel during your morning meditation.
There are plenty of different instructors with a variety of backgrounds (think Tibetan Buddhist, for example). Take a bunch of courses and see which types stick with you, then delve deeper.
