So many of us have gone blonde only to have our hair be brassy after just a couple washes. Sound familiar? Yeah, same. If so, I’d love to introduce you to some toning shampoos and conditioners that can help your color stay fresh between salon visits.

Not all purple shampoos are created equal. The level of pigmentation and your starting color will change the results you get drastically, so make sure you choose the right one for you! Not even the best purple shampoo can completely eradicate serious yellow tones, so if you’re dealing with super stubborn brass, your best bet is to consult a stylist.

If you just need to keep pale, cool tones in check, we love these purple shampoos!

If your hair is already quite a pale blonde, and you need to keep it fresh but not overly toned, I would recommend these purple shampoos from Paul Mitchell, Oribe, or Joico.

Amika, Pravana, and Pureology are also great for refreshing your blonde between salon visits.

If your hair needs some heftier toning, or if you are trying to get a silvery purple hue to your blonde hair, the Fanola or Bold Uniq purple shampoos are great options for you. If your hair is a pale blonde already, these may be too strong for you, unless you’re wanting a silvery violet look in your hair, so be careful — Overtone’s mask is particularly strong!

If you’d prefer a purple hair mask instead/along with your purple shampoo, these purple toning masks are a great option.

One final thing: If purple shampoos have never worked for you, it may be that your hair isn’t light enough for the purple pigments to have an effect.

If you look at a color wheel, purple is across from yellow, but blue is across from orange. Color depositing shampoos do not lighten your hair. Essentially, what color depositing (purple/ blue) shampoos are doing is neutralizing the yellow or orange tones that are in your hair.

So, if your hair is a deeper blonde or a lightened, highlighted brunette with more orange or brassy tones, a blue shampoo may be a better choice to try.
