They contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, botanicals on some occasions, and sometimes other ingredients (like zinc or calcium). These ingredients’ properties can be beneficial for problems such as acne, hair growth, or skin protection. Combined, you have a powerhouse of a supplement.
Keep in mind, these shouldn’t replace your usual medications or vitamins. That’s why they’re called supplements.
Do Supplements Work?
It depends on who you ask and what’s in that specific supplement. The FDA doesn’t regulate these supplements like they do prescription drugs; so, even though they might claim their effects to be clinically proven, the FDA won’t back them up. However, certain vitamins have ingredients that have proven to be beneficial.
For example, biotin — which is vitamin B7 in scientific speak — helps with skin and hair. Collagen ups your nail game, while astaxanthin protects you from UV skin damage. And chasteberry can help with PMS symptoms and gynecological symptoms.
