Winona Ryder’s iconic 90’s fashion style is still as relevant as ever. Known as the godmother of grunge, she absolutely bodied every outfit she wore and we are still in awe at how effortlessly she did THAT. Her goth-inspired grunge looks had everyone wearing black to every occasion, so today we honor the fashion icon she is by stealing her envy-worthy style.
90’s Grunge Casual Style Inspired by Winona Ryder
To nail Winona’s 90’s chic looks, graphic tees are basically uniform. Cool, comfy, and fresh, you’ll be the cool girl next door in this oversized graphic tee. We recommend thrifting your graphic tees for a true 90’s vintage vibe. A worn look adds to the charm of Winona’s style.
Not in the mood for a graphic tee? Reach for a lace-trimmed camisole instead (yes the ones we wear under our blouses for extra coverage or even to sleep!). Any knit cami top will do, or you can opt for a satin piece if you want to look sharper.
Leather Moto Jacket
The outerwear staple of the 90’s – you can’t rock a grunge chic attire without a leather moto jacket like this one. You can skip all the bells and whistles, stick to a simple silhouette that’s high-quality and durable.
To be specific, opt for straight-cut high-rise or mid-rise denim jeans. You probably own a pair since the 90’s denim silhouettes have returned the past 2 years (we’re ditching the skinny jeans). They’re so comfortable and will compliment a tucked in tee and cropped jacket or oversized outerwear piece for that effortless boyish look. Rock them cuffed with a pair of sneakers or black booties the way Winona does. If you’re not feeling pants, wear a simple denim skirt instead with black tights. Don’t forget a black leather belt!
Oversized Satin/Nylon Jacket
This outerwear piece is meant to be mens inspired and oversized. Be flexible with this as you’ll probably find more luck shopping in the men’s section for a bomber or coach’s jacket in a fit similar to Winona’s. The sheen of the satin or nylon will make a cool contrast against your cotton tee and denim bottoms.
The Iconic Little Black Dress Moments
How gorgeous was the leather number on Winona?! Rocking an LBD in a leather fabrication is an unexpected, bold, and fashion-forward twist on a traditional LBD. You can choose a style like this piece, very similar to Winona’s that features a mini length, collars, long sleeves, and a tie waist. Or choose a piece in popular 90’s silhouettes like a bardot neckline or square neckline also seen often on Winona.
Velvet and Lace
For a more formal occasion, Winona likes to wear velvet and lace pieces which are timeless and classic. We’re loving the longer length for these pieces (midi and maxi) and the more modest, high necklines. If you’re wearing an all-black Velvet piece, pair it with a choker like Winona’s and a sheer mock neck top if you desire more coverage and a stylish element; for a more feminine lace number, keep the accessorizing to a minimum and the makeup bright and fresh.
The slip dress was a very popular silhouette in the 90’s and this is a style we see Winona wear all the time. Her slip dresses normally feature V-necklines, some subtle trims of lace or waist ties, and thin straps. This is one of the most versatile pieces to own and it can be layered with pieces under or over.
The Times Winona Wore Floral and Color Beautifully
Winona surprises us with her sweet style in an adorable blue smock dress. We have been seeing smocked dresses everywhere this year and we’re obsessed with how breezy and charming this style is. Winona rocks a gingham knee-length dress with subtle embroidery but any variation of this will have you looking cute as a button.
Dark florals are one of our favorite patterns to wear for the Fall, and Winona shows us just how to do it – she flawlessly nails the grungey and moody feel of the dark floral dress. To rock it like she does, opt for a midi or maxi piece paired with black block-heeled mules (or loafers).
