October is the time for spooky movies — after all, how else can you prepare for Halloween? If you’re looking for Halloween movies that will give you the creeps — or scare you out of your skin — look no further than this list. Get ready to get spooked!
The Addams Family Values
It’s only appropriate to start this list with the ultimate spooky (and all together ooky) Addams family. Addams Family Values follows Uncle Fester falling in love…but is this woman truly his soulmate, or is she simply in it for the money? And if it is for the money, how far will she go? All I’ll reveal is that little Pubert proves he’s an Addams.
Hocus Pocus
It’s been 300 years since witches were burned at the stake, and the executed Sanderson sisters have been brought back to life when a teenager lights a candle. Now, the Sanderson sisters have only Halloween night to achieve their goals of becoming immortal, and it’s up to a teen, his prospective girlfriend, annoying little sister, and an immortal cat to stop them.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Almost everyone has seen The Nightmare Before Christmas, but If you haven’t, a brief summary: Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, falls in love with it, and brings Christmas — and Santa — back home. But with citizens confused by the sudden change in holiday plans, Jack may not celebrate his obsession after all.
Psycho
The movie that made everyone scared to shower with an opaque curtain. Marion stops at the Bates Motel late one night, tired from a long drive. Greeted by Norman, a seemingly kind but awkward man under his mother’s thumb, Marion becomes hesitant about her decision to stop at this particular motel. But with the potential to start a life with the man she loves, she decides to settle in for the night, oblivious to the potential darkness lurking up the hill.
The Strangers
Couple James Hoyt and Kristen McKay are already struggling, tense after a wedding reception. But resentment quickly turns to fear when there’s a loud knock on the door, and three masked intruders barge in. With the assailants’ intensity building and no way of escaping, will James and Kristen survive a night filled with strangers?
The Conjuring
Is your house a source of paranormal activity? Call in paranormal investigators. Based on actual case files of investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, this film reenacts their visit to the home of a family experiencing dark forces. Finding the home to be a source of satanic haunting, Ed and Lorraine must work to help eradicate the paranormal presence and save the family.
Get Out
Jordan Peele’s breakout film is unforgettable, and downright unsettling. Rose (who is White) invites her Black boyfriend, Chris, to meet her family, but he becomes increasingly unnerved as he receives strange treatment from her parents. Is it just awkwardness and discomfort from a racial disparity, or is there evil within the family? Eventually, one thing becomes clear: Chris needs to get out ASAP.
Beetlejuice
Don’t say it three times! Or do, because this film is a classic. Adam and Barbara are a couple devastated by death…their own death, that is. Stuck haunting their previous home, they become increasingly frustrated as the Deetzes move in, making a mess of the home they loved so much. Despite their best efforts, they eventually call in Beetlejuice to scare the Deetzes out — but Beetlejuice doesn’t exactly stick to the plan.
Paranormal Activity
Paranormal Activity was one of the most-talked-about movies in 2007, because it’s downright creepy. It’s not your typical scary movie; instead, surveillance footage pieces together nights in Katie and Micah’s house. Katie admits she’s been haunted since she was a child, and while Micah is skeptical, the aforementioned tapes reveal something sinister in their new home.
Silence of the Lambs
Clarice Starling is a young FBI trainee looking to establish her career. When her superior instructs her to join the manhunt for a serial killer nicknamed “Buffalo Bill,” Clarice decides to consult former psychiatrist and cannibalistic mass-murderer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Will Dr. Lecter’s insight as a psychopath lead her to Buffalo Bill, or is Clarice in over her head?
Scary Movie
Scary Movie offers laughs while still following the recipe for a scary movie. While driving, six teenagers accidentally kill a man on Halloween. After disposing of the body, they swear to keep it a secret. When a serial killer begins stalking the teenagers a year later, the teens try to outwit the murderer while avoiding local news reporter Gail Hailstorm.
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Nancy begins having dreams about a killer with knives for fingers. When she discovers that her friends are having the same dream, they reflect on the odd coincidence. But when her friends die in their dreams — and in real life — Nancy realizes she must find out the identity of her serial killer and stop him. Her only other option? Never sleeping again.
Scream
Sidney’s mother is violently killed, and a year later, it appears that the murderer is back. The killer sets their sights on Sidney next, and soon, both her boyfriend and father are suspects. Local tabloid reporter Gale Weathers is determined to reveal the identity of both Sidney’s mother killer and Sidney’s stalker.
Stephen King’s IT
Child outcasts are terrorized by a group of teenagers, sure. But their biggest problem is the local demon, Pennywise (aka IT), who can shapeshift into a clown and likes to prey on children. Eventually, the group of children defeats Pennywise…or so they think. Thirty years later, IT returns, and the children — now adults — must reunite and try to stop IT once again.
Corpse Bride
Victor Van Dort is set to marry Victoria Everglot in an arranged marriage, but Victor finds himself experiencing cold feet. When he practices his vows and places a ring on a corpse, the corpse brings him into the Land of the Dead, mistaking Victor’s practicing for actual vows. Victor must fight to return to the land of the living — but it won’t be as simple as breaking vows to the Corpse Bride.
A Quiet Place
Consider yourself a quiet person? Could you survive the earth as violent beings track humans solely through sound? The Abbotts are possibly the last people on earth and must remain silent to evade death. As they try to learn more about these creatures, parents Lee and Evelyn desperately try to protect their children, who can’t fully grasp the great lengths their parents have gone to in order to keep them safe.
Bird Box
Bird Box was talked about around the world, with 45 million people streaming the post-apocalyptic Netflix thriller. As global havoc unfolds, mother Malorie and two children must make their way to safety. However, the journey must be made blindly, with nothing but hope guiding the single mother and her children.
Halloweentown
Marnie is a regular pre-teen, prepping for Halloween with siblings Dylan and Sophie. When grandmother Aggie comes into town, Marnie learns that her mother, Gwen, is a witch — and Marnie is one, too. With her 13th birthday looming, Marnie must learn magic or lose her powers forever. When Aggie announces that there is evil in Halloweentown, it appears to be the perfect time for the pre-teen to harness her powers. Can Marnie and her family save Halloweentown, or will Marnie lose her powers forever?
