If there’s one thing certain about East Coast weather, it’s that our seasons are chronically capricious. Forget the phrase that says March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb — instead, it seems like Mother Nature embodies a moody, hybrid creature that is simultaneously part-lion, part-lamb.

But despite the confusion over which season the winds are teasing, there’s one telltale sign that spring has arrived for an extended stay: bugs.

Suddenly, insects are popping up everywhere, and I’m not talking about the colorful butterflies flitting around outside. I’m talking about the bold, six-legged trespassers cruising around my apartment carpet. Now, it’s not like I’ve spotted a juicy cockroach or army of ants inside yet, but even the occasional beetle is an uninvited guest that sparks a high-pitched shriek. And I know this inquisitive beetle isn’t acting alone. He most likely has a battalion behind him, clamoring to storm the castle.
This annual, warm-weather march of the insects can only mean one thing: I’ve neglected to tidy up my apartment all winter, and now it’s time for the dreaded spring cleaning.
