If you’ve ever gone to the spa and had a facial, chances are they used a facial steamer on you. Once you’re done, you feel refreshed, your skin is practically glowing, and you can’t wait to go back — but your wallet might make you wait. Why do spas have to cost money?
You shouldn’t have to spend a pretty penny to get spa-like results. Adding a facial steamer to your at-home skincare routine can have many benefits. According to Heathline, not only can steaming help your skin absorb skincare products better by opening your pores, it can also promote circulation as well as collagen and elastin production.
This helps your skin release impurities like dead skin cells, thus helping prevent things like acne or blackheads. Facial steaming can also help with your skin’s hydration. During these winter months, our skin gets extra dry and adding a facial steamer on top of your skincare routine can really help keep your skin hydrated and plump.
While you can steam with a hot towel or a bowl of warm water, we recommend a facial steamer. I mean, it’s just convenient and easy — plus, it’ll give you that spa feel from home! Here are our recommendations:

How To Use Your New Facial Steamer
You should always use your facial steamer after your skin is cleansed. So, take off your makeup and wash your face to make sure it’s properly prepped to begin your steam. We also recommend using a facial headband to keep your hair out of your face, allowing you to steam the entirety of your face and hairline.
Now that you’re prepped, it’s time to steam. You should always use distilled water when you fill up your steamer — normal tap water contains minerals that can clog your facial steamer over time.
Dr. Dennis Gross recommends that you “Situate yourself 8 to 12 inches from the steam. Sit there for two minutes, then check your skin in the mirror. If it feels okay, then steam for up to 9 minutes, stopping if it starts to irritate your visage.” These tips are important because steam can be very hot and if you sit too close to the facial steamer, there’s a potential risk of burning or irritating your skin. Whichever steamer you choose, read the instructions carefully, as every steamer is different. They will usually tell you how many times a week is recommended with that specific steamer and, remember, you shouldn’t be steaming every day.
