We did it. We made it through another sweaty, suffocating summer – one of the hottest summers on record, in fact. By day, we slathered sunscreen on our skin, sipped frozen cocktails by the pool, and snacked on basketfuls of summer berries; by dark, we cranked our AC units to high speed and hoped for a cooler night’s sleep.
It’s with mixed feelings now that we wish farewell to sweltering summer – and say hello to heavenly autumn, the colorful season of cinnamon spice. The iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte has popped up at Starbucks counters everywhere and the fall lineup at Trader Joe’s is flamboyantly bursting with butternut squash. But as much as I get giddy over fall’s most notable flavors, I’m not just talking about food and beverage – I’m equally excited about fall fragrances, too.
Yep, I’m talking about scented candles, and there’s no better time to stock up.
Scents Make Sense: Benefits Of Fall Candles
If you think that candles are a luxury item best reserved for special occasions, think again. Scented candles, when incorporated into our daily physical space, can convey numerous psychological benefits, including improved mood, reduced anxiety, and greater overall well-being. Some studies have even found a link between certain scents and reduced physiological symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and nasal congestion.
“It is scientifically proven that scented candles can play an essential role in the physical effects of mood, stress, working capacity, and overall mental health,” says Chryssa Chalkia, an accredited clinical integrative psychotherapist and cognitive behavioral therapist. “The smell of scented candles stimulates our limbic system, the part of the brain that is home to our memory and emotions. Hormones like serotonin and dopamine can be produced to help regulate mood. Therefore, our emotional state is influenced by the relationship that exists between scents, memories, and emotions,” she explains.
