With COVID still in full swing, we figured now is a better time than ever to start a series of “book club” articles for your entertainment. Every couple weeks we will post not only new books you should totally read, but also TV shows, and podcasts. Plus there’s no excuse to not check out a new book or watch a new tv show since there’s not much else to do anyway.
What To Read:
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia
This novel is in production to be made into a Hulu series produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuleos. You should definitely read the novel before watching any adaptations. It’s a supernatural novel but also a love story and a story about the bonds of family.
Moms Who Drink and Swear by Nicole Knepper
My daughter gifted me this book and I knew from the title it was going to be perfect for me. Nicole’s hilarious stories about raising her kids and growing up herself are very relatable and a great getaway from being with your own kids 24/7 right now.
Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi
In this dystopian novel set in the United States after a great drought when the country is brought to Civil War over water rights, the characters are forced to face their own apocalyptic choices in a fight for survival. Considering the climate change issues our world is currently facing, this fiction novel feels all too possible.
What To Watch:
The Umbrella Academy
If you enjoy Marvel movies, comic book adaptations, supernatural series’ like Heroes or Charmed, etc. — this show will be for you. It’s currently in its long-awaited second season set in the 1960’s. Every episode keeps you on your toes and there are twists and turns throughout the whole season. It’s extremely entertaining and you can tell the cast has amazing chemistry on and off screen.
Yellowstone
If you haven’t started this series yet, now is a great time. It’s violent and intense and worth watching just for the stunning visual backgrounds of Montana and Yellowstone. A family fights to protect the vast ranch that has been their legacy for generations and the fight is bloody, merciless and personal.
The Peanut Butter Falcon
If you didn’t catch this movie last year, you need to see it. A young boy with Down Syndrome breaks out of his assisted living facility and goes on an adventure to fulfill his dream of becoming a wrestler. It’s such a sweet and heartwarming tale and the acting is superb. It’s no wonder it won plenty of awards.
What To Listen To:
Someone Knows Something on CBC Radio
This podcast, hosted by David Ridgin, follows a new unsolved crime or mystery each season and is extremely engaging. David’s calm voice pulls you into each mystery and his investigative journalism is top of the line.
This self-care focused podcast for women focuses on sisterhood and storytelling with each episode hosted by Alex and a new guest and covering a new topic. Very helpful to ground yourself and refocus your intentions, get motivated, and discover new wellness and health related topics.
Okay, I am going to assume we all watched the entirety of Schitt’s Creek and fell in love with the characters and the actors who portrayed them, obviously. So if you’re missing the show as much as we are, you should catch Emily Hampshire’s podcast where she interviews celebrities and talks about all the quirky things with her friends.
