Mermaid waves are all the rage nowadays. They give you that perfect look of being put together without having to put too much effort into it. They’re the new beach waves, with the main difference being that mermaid waves don’t focus as much on creating tousled volume on the crown of your head, and instead start waves a bit further down the hair shaft.
If you want to try the mermaid waves trend, you’re in the right place! We’ll show you how to effortlessly get these enviable waves — keep reading!
Instructions
I start by blow drying my hair but you can start with your natural hair if it’s somewhat straight. To prep my hair (if you start when it’s wet) I use It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin, spraying the ends of my hair and never the top (I find it sometimes makes the texture on top feel gross) and then I dry my hair.
From here it’s super simple. I’ll prep my hair for heat with the Living Proof Heat Styling Spray. This spray protects up to 450º of heat, so it’s amazing for whatever kind of heat you put on your hair. The key to creating easy mermaid waves is using the right tool. I use the Bed Head Wave Artist Deep Waver. It works wonders on my hair.
I like to separate my hair into sections — I do 4 sections because I have a lot of really long hair, but you can do as many as works for you. I secure each section with a claw clip and then I go in with the iron. The waver I mentioned above is almost like a crimper rather than a standard curling iron, so no wrapping the hair around the wand — I just clamp the tool down at the base of my head and hold it for 3-4 seconds (because my hair curls very easily). Then I release the clamp, move to the next section down the shaft, and repeat.
I’ll continue doing this until my final section, the very top. Here I like to keep the top more flat and will use the tool starting at eye level. This is just personal preference, and you can do the top if you’d like. To finish it off I spray my hair with dry shampoo — I don’t typically use hair spray because my hair doesn’t need it. I found dry shampoo gives my hair a nice texture and allows the curls to hold longer.
