When it comes to manicures, I am the worst. I am a chronic nail biter (I know, ew) and I’m constantly accidentally using my hands and chipping the polish. I gave up on nail polish for years because of that – I just didn’t see the point when it was going to be effed up a day later.
That’s why gel manicures piqued my curiosity. So, I tried them, and I fell in love. And then COVID hit. I decided to do my research and figure out how to get my best gel nails at home. Read on for our favorites!
How to Start
Prep your nails as you would for a manicure. Wash your hands once you’re done with the cuticle oil; leftover oil may ruin your manicure. Finally, swipe your nails with an alcohol wipe to get rid of any residue from your primping.
After all of this, you can begin to press the gel on. With some gel polishes, you’ll need a UV lamp to help cure the layers. But who has time for that? That’s why our favorite gels are DIY and require no fancy equipment. Read on for our suggestions!
Essie Gel Couture
At Ulta, you have a choice of 27 different colors. And you don’t need anything fancy, like a base coat – this gel does almost everything for you. Just paint this polish on, end with an Essie top coat, and you’re ready to go for two weeks.
Sally Hansen Miracle Gel
No, we’re not joking: there are SEVENTY-FOUR different colors, and each is less than $10. It’s only a two-step process, simplifying the journey to your best nails yet. Prep your nails as you would a normal mani, put two coats of this gorg polish on, and then use the Miracle Top Coat.
Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab Pro Nail Polish
The options are endless. Want a crème finish? How about a shimmer? Or a high shine? You don’t have to decide on just one with this affordable gel polish. The 320 bristles give an even coat for a gorgeous finish.
NAILS INC. Gel Nail Polish
This polish boasts the ability to give your nails a plumping effect. On top of that, it conditions and strengthens your nails – something you don’t think about when polish comes up. It has resin in it for its shiny finish and firm stick to the nail.
