The Two Types of Magnetic Eyelashes

The first is the magnetic lash and magnetic liner duo. These are magnetic lashes that are applied by first applying a magnetic eyeliner to your eyelid and then affixing the eyelash strip to this eyeliner. This kind attaches the lash to your eyelid (just like a strip lash) and not to your natural lashes. The advantage of this is that it won’t affect your natural eyelashes with its weight which may lead to breakage, and you don’t have to bother with adhesives. The downside is that you have to apply the eyeliner line very thick which may not be a makeup look you prefer, and you could have an allergy or sensitivity to the eyeliner.
The second type is the two sets of false eyelashes with magnets attached to them – one goes above your natural lashes and one goes below, effectively sandwiching the natural lashes. This is not likely to cause any kind of irritation for people like me who are allergic to adhesives, but is very tricky to put on straight even the first few times (it takes some getting used to as the magnets want to click together before you have them lined up properly) and they are hard to remove without pulling which can damage your natural lashes.

Let’s Talk Magnetic Eyelashes: Safety

To start off, it’s good to know that the FDA has a special category for eye cosmetic safety meaning magnetic eyelash products being manufactured and sold by an approved U.S. vendor have passed safety standards. The electromagnetic frequency from the magnets are also low which poses lower risks to the eye.

How do they affect your natural lashes?

It’s important to read application and removal instructions as this will minimize damage to your lashes. The difference between traditional adhesive strip lashes is that it sits on your eyelids near the base of your lashes, whereas magnetic lashes sit on your lashes. This may lead to breakage with excessive use or improper removal. Remember to sanitize your lashes and don’t share them!

The Bottom Line:

Once you realize how easy they are to apply, you’ll probably want to wear magnetic eyelashes every single day—but please don’t. The reason why is because it can cause lash damage over time. Also I do not recommend trying them for the first time right before a big event, since there’s always the possibility of contact dermatitis or an allergy to occur (in which case you should stop using them ASAP). Other than that, you’ll also want to be gentle when it comes to application, since your lashes are pretty delicate.
