Lynda Carter was and is one of the first quintessential American superheroes. She first appeared as Wonder Woman, an Amazonian superhero in the eponymous TV series from 1976 to 1979. She’d started acting at the age of 5. Beyond her acting, she was a model and beauty pageant contestant, crowned Miss World USA in 1972 and voted “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World” by the International Academy of Beauty and the British Press Organization.
Over the years, Carter took on the worlds of music, film, and television. She’s also been an outspoken advocate for Breast Cancer Awareness, abortion rights, legal equality for the LGBTQ+ community, and substance abuse issues. Through some of the toughest times in her life, as she recovered from her alcoholism, her husband, Robert Altman, was her knight in shining armor. They got each other through the tough times, growing stronger together. With as close as they became over their 37 years of marriage, his death in February of myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer, was devastating.

In her Instagram announcement of his death, Carter says, “Robert is the love of my life, and he always will be.” They worked together through thick and thin, even working with him as voice talent for voiceovers on The Elder Scrolls and other video games during his tenure as CEO of Bethesda Games. She says, “Our 37 years of marriage were an extraordinary gift. We shared the passion I hope everyone is lucky enough to experience in their lifetime. We protected each other and were each other’s champions always.”
The months since his death have not been easy, but Carter has been busy. She says, “It’s been a very difficult year and one where I just kept my one foot in front of the other.” She has returned to her singing and songwriting to honor his memory. Furthermore, she recently released a new song, “Human and Divine,” as a tribute to their love affair.
Carter explains her release: “Music is in our souls, in our hearts, in our minds and in our bodies. We mark events with certain kinds of music, we attribute love to certain kinds of music. Writing this song, I felt extremely vulnerable and inspired. That is where the human and the divine come together.”
Carter has been working on her part as Asteria in Wonder Woman 3, and she’s experiencing shifts in meaning. She says, “We’re there doing our damnedest to produce something that someone wants to listen to, or wants to watch, and that’s the magic of it. You hope they do, but you’re just doing it for the love of the music.” Beyond a story of finding love, her lyrics have tapped into a feeling of empowerment. She also says, “We use music to mark our lives.” It’s a new and unknown part of her life. It’s part of grief as an uphill battle, but it’s also something of a reinvention. She’s just trying to figure it out.
