According to National Geographic, the amount of plastic packaging on U.S. products has increased by over 120 times since 1960 with almost 70 percent of that waste piling up in landfills.
To be fair, that number does include more than single-use personal care items, but it also offers a sobering insight into how much plastic we use as a society.
What’s more, Nat Geo claims that globally, the packaging industry for beauty and personal care products makes up nearly $25 billion in sales.

Ethique
Ethique’s range of shampoo bars is impressive, with equally flirty names (Pinkalicious, for starters). Each bar arrives on your doorstep in a cardboard container. Place the bar in your bathroom, and recycle or compost the packaging. Their new sustainable lip balm is worth a gander, too.
Lush Cosmetics
I love the lotion bars from Lush, a UK-based beauty company. Don’t even get me started on the solid soap…the Honey I Washed The Kids is a cult fave for a reason. For jetting around town, though, I use the brand’s wash cards – little slivers of scented soap that you can carry in your wallet without fear of getting your handbag all gloopy.
Kjaer Weis
I have their famed lip tint and you can pry it from my cold, dead hands. The tint comes in a handful of cute colors, but the too-pretty-to-leave-in-the-bathroom-drawer refillable compact keeps packaging on a necessity-only basis.

Dove
In a watch-this-space announcement, Unilever has announced that by 2025, all of the plastic packaging for the Dove beauty bar will be 100% fully reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
River Organics
The lip balms from River Organics come in an earth-friendly paper tube, designed to be easily recycled. Also, check out their glass-jar encased body oils.
