Considering Plastic Surgery? Popular Procedures And What You Need To Know Beforehand

Even though many plastic surgeries are done to reduce the appearance of aging, that doesn’t mean that they’re only done to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. In fact, the last couple of years have seen more young people than ever seeking plastic surgery for various reasons. Around 40% of people aged 39 or under have either gotten a cosmetic procedure already or are considering getting one within the next year. Some want to look more aesthetically appealing, while others are interested in getting preventative anti-aging procedures.

Anyone who’s considering plastic surgery should do their research on the doctors they’re considering, though; opting for a budget surgery raises the risk of botched results or complications, either during or after the procedure. Doctors that are board-certified and have an abundance of positive testimonials, like Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Raj, should give you both peace of mind and better results.

Here are some common types of plastic surgery you may be considering, and what to know before you go.

Breast Reduction

Due to genetics, hormones, or other factors, some women have breasts that are big enough to cause physical or mental discomfort. One common side effect of an overly large bust is constant neck or back pain. Some women also have a hard time finding clothes that complement their figures and make it comfortable to exercise or enjoy various daily activities.

Liposuction

About a quarter of all liposuctions done in the U.S. are received by millennials every year, so it’s obviously a popular choice. Some surgeons are noticing that when younger patients request liposuction, they’re often motivated by the (usually photoshopped) figures they see on social media sites. When this comes up, it becomes necessary to explain what liposuction can and can’t do.

What it can do is target stubborn fat deposits in the sides, flanks, belly, buttocks, chin, and elsewhere that refuse to go away with diet or exercise. What it can’t do is magically cause weight loss due to full-body fat removal. The younger you are when you get liposuction, the more flexible and elastic your skin is, meaning it’s likely to adhere to your new body shape.

Breast Augmentation

This procedure is often done for aesthetic reasons, with many women getting a breast augmentation to improve the shape of their busts after pregnancy or weight loss.

Breast augmentations of the past frequently resulted in an oversized, exaggerated effect, but the procedure has been refined in recent years to give a more natural, subtle look that doesn’t necessarily appear to be the product of surgical enhancement. In some cases, a breast augmentation is done in tandem with a breast lift. If there’s any sagging due to breastfeeding, age, or other factors, this approach can ensure optimum results.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty

While a conventional rhinoplasty is fairly invasive and involves a lot of recovery time, a non-surgical rhinoplasty is done with injectable fillers like hyaluronic acid. Even though it only provides temporary improvements to the shape of the nose, it’s still popular because of its simplicity. After all, not everyone wants to have their nose completely overhauled through surgery; some people can get their ideal nose with a simple injection every now and again.

Microneedling

This procedure is a method of dermarolling that may help the skin produce new tissue and increased collagen. It pricks the skin on your face with microneedles (hence the name), and is supposed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It’s also a common choice for those who are trying to treat acne scars, even if those scars are many years old. Whether someone’s trying to address wrinkles, scars, or even large pores, microneedling has grown in popularity as a way to encourage firmer, smoother skin.

Dermal Fillers

There are several different kinds of dermal fillers, and they’re all used for specific purposes; what they all have in common, though, is that they’re used to increase fullness and volume by injecting them just under the skin. The most commonly used dermal fillers are:

  • Polyalkylimide – an artificial gel which eliminates deep lines in the face and restores lost volume due to weight loss or age.

  • Polylactic acid – a filler that promotes collagen production in the skin.

  • Calcium hydroxylapatite – a naturally occurring compound (found in bones) which is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Hyaluronic acid – another naturally occurring compound that adds volume to the skin, as well as plumping it.

Each filler has unique properties, and they’re generally used around the face. Areas like the mouth, forehead, and eyes are the ones most likely to show signs of aging, so they’re the spots that are generally targeted by dermal filler treatments.

Botox

With an estimated 4.5 million Botox procedures performed in the U.S. every year, it’s safe to say that this is near the top of the list for popular cosmetic procedures. Much of its popularity probably stems from its convenience – you could get a Botox injection over your lunch break, if you wanted. The effects are temporary, but many people are willing to keep up with regular injections in order to reduce or prevent fine lines or wrinkles.

Botox is actually a neurotoxin which is injected in small amounts to freeze certain muscles in the face. This not only reduces the appearance of wrinkles, but can also slow the development of new ones. This is why so many millennials are getting Botox – they’re using it as a proactive anti-aging measure.
