It seems like everything these days is infused with CBD, and for good reason. CBD offers many great benefits and can be a smart addition to your current skincare routine. It’s no surprise skincare and beauty brands have started looking into unconventional ingredients when creating their products, and as customers we’re getting to experiment with new products, and finding our holy grails along the way. Many major skincare companies have released new lines of CBD products in the past year which have become wildly popular among skincare enthusiasts. For those of you who are still skeptical about CBD products, we’re breaking it down today.
What is CBD?
Let’s get this out of the way – it’s not *exactly* weed. CBD, Cannabidiol, is a compound derived from the marijuana plant (cannabis) and hemp, which is also a type of cannabis. Hempseed oil is commonly used in many skincare products. Both of these ingredients are incorporated into skincare products with little to no THC, which is the compound that causes the effects of a “high”. So no, you will not get high from using CBD skincare and beauty products.
What are the benefits?
Since Cannabidiol being used in western beauty and skincare is a rather recent discovery, there are still ongoing tests and studies on the true effectiveness of CBD, alone and in comparison to more well-known, traditional ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid. There haven’t been any conclusive results that advise against the use of CBD in skincare, and it is a generally safe ingredient to use. What we do know is that CBD is a soothing ingredient, carrying anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant benefits which treats redness, dryness, and skin conditions like eczema and acne.

Should I incorporate CBD into my skincare routine?
Like any other trendy product, we recommend doing the research and figuring out what it is that your skin needs. Maybe your skin type would not greatly benefit from CBD and there are better ingredients more suitable for your needs. Keep in mind that potency is very important – too much of something is never a good thing.
CBD is generally used in 3 forms – full spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. Full spectrum CBD oil is going to contain all the cannabinoids naturally occurring in cannabis, and offers the fullest benefits of the cannabis plant. Broad-spectrum CBD oil will contain compounds from hemp, with THC completely removed. CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD and best for facial skin, carries antioxidants, and won’t clog pores.
**A smart practice for any skincare/beauty purchase is to check the label! CBD oil, hempseed oil, and sativa seed oil all differ slightly in terms of potency, texture, and effectiveness so be sure to check which ingredients are used in your products.
