Move Over, Amazon Prime — Walmart+ Is Your New Big Competitor

Featured Image Source

We all have an Amazon Prime account by now. It’s super easy and convenient — free 2-day shipping on practically anything? Yes, please! Especially after the quarantine and stay-at-home orders of 2020, there’s more demand than ever for fast and easy ways to get all your necessities delivered straight to your door. We’re seeing more companies respond to this demand, and Amazon is getting some hefty competition — especially with Walmart’s new rollout of Walmart Plus on Sept. 15, 2020.

Ok, so Walmart is trying to become a viable Amazon competitor. But how does Walmart Plus actually compare to Amazon Prime? Keep reading for the full scoop (hint — you may want to make the switch).

First Things First — Fees

Like Amazon Prime, Walmart Plus requires a subscription to reap all the benefits it offers. Both services are priced similarly, but if you pay annually, Walmart Plus wins this category:

  • Amazon Prime offers new members a free 30-day trial. After that, you’ll be charged $12.99/month or $119/year

  • Walmart Plus offers new members a free 15-day trial. After that, you’ll be charged $12.95/month or $98/year.

**It should be noted that Amazon Prime offers special pricing for students and EBT or Medicaid card holders, while Walmart Plus doesn’t at this time.

What’s included in the membership?

Both services offer similar perks (namely free delivery and grocery delivery to certain locations).

Walmart Plus has a couple perks that Amazon Prime does not offer:

  • Member fuel pricing: Save 5c/gallon on fuel at Walmart, Murphy, and Sam’s Club stations.

  • Mobile scan + go: If you’re shopping in a Walmart store, you can scan your items on your phone as you go for easier checkout.

  • Free same-day delivery: If you live near a participating Walmart location, receive free same-day delivery on orders (grocery and non-grocery) of $35 or more.

Walmart Plus has also updated their free shipping policy. They no longer have a $35 minimum on next-day or 2-day shipping orders, and shipping is always free. We see this as a big advantage and wise decision on their part, as it puts them on equal footing with Amazon Prime — and the above perks honestly make Walmart Plus the better choice, in our opinion.

What about groceries?

Both services offer free same-day grocery delivery as long as you live near a participating store (Whole Foods for Amazon). To get free Amazon Fresh grocery delivery, you need to have Amazon Prime and a cart minimum of $35 or $50 depending on your location. Walmart Plus also requires an order minimum of $35 to receive free grocery delivery. These services are pretty comparable, and which one works best for you would depend mostly on the service’s availability in your location. And while Walmarts are available nationwide, Whole Foods locations are VERY limited and practically nonexistent in the South and Midwest.

**A big perk for Walmart Plus is that you can include non-grocery items and grocery items in the same order, whereas the Amazon Fresh selection is more limited because Amazon Fresh only delivers from Whole Foods.

So, which is better?

If you’re looking for a delivery service for groceries and day-to-day products, Walmart Plus is our choice. The selection of products available is slightly more limited just because you can only get what Walmart has in stock, but this will likely just mean less brand variety than Amazon Prime. If you use other services, though, such as Amazon Prime Video or Prime Gaming, it may be worth it to stick with your Prime subscription.

In our opinion though, Walmart Plus is a seriously competitive choice. Need shampoo, groceries, whisks, some throw pillows, and lightbulbs? You can get all of them delivered today for free with a $35 minimum order, and that’s something Amazon Prime doesn’t offer (and they’re not likely to in the near future).

Want to make the switch? Or just try out Walmart Plus and see if it’s worth it? Sign up today and get a 15-day free trial. We promise it’s worth it!
