It’s Hot As Balls Outside

It’s Summer, woo hoo! Kids are splashing in the pool, refusing to put on actual clothes, life is chaos and joy of joys- you need to look office appropriate while somehow not melting into the pavement the moment you step out of your air conditioned office building. Behold, I have the answers and I will bestow them upon you. Go in peace (and stay cool).

 

God’s gift to us this and every Summer- Linen. Now I know it wrinkles if you even look at it sideways, but it keeps you cool and dry, looks posh, and can be found at every price point. I am not advocating for the classic linen shift dress, because the moment you sit in your car to drive to work that shit will crease right at the mid section where you usually wouldn’t want to draw attention. So no linen shift dresses, but I do love a good linen pant. Sophisticated and polished, professional but cute enough to wear on vacay with a bodysuit. Here are some examples:

 

I sincerely hope your office does not require women to wear pantyhose. Can we just kill the whole pantyhose industry at this point? I mean, in the height of summer when it’s 100 + degrees outside I would rather wrestle the Revenant bear than try and wrestle my sweaty thighs into some nylons. Hells to the no. So if you are one of the lucky ones who can forego the pantyhose (it’s not the 1950s people), then I recommend a good shirtdress. The key is to go for a modest length and the belted waist is mandatory. You don’t want it to look like you’re rolling in with your hubby’s dress shirt on cause this ain’t Risky Business folks. Here is how it’s done ladies:

Last but not least, opt for a shell or camisole and blazer combo so you can whip that blazer off the very second you get to the elevator. Most important, go for a less cleavagey camisole if you go that route. We already have to contend with workplace harrassment and while you have every right to flash that boob crease like you’re running for mayor of Boob City, you might save yourself a bit of a HR paperwork by keeping it modest. My Not For Reals Summer Book Club

I’m planning to read a bunch this summer because I tend to find myself with more times on my hands without a school schedule and we travel quite a bit which means I have to pack a ton of books since I get bored easily and also I am so pale that I have to hide indoors from the sun (perfect excuse to read).

So here are some of my summer reading recommendations for y’all, think of it like a summer book club except: I don’t want to meet in real life to discuss these books because 1) what if you hate the books I recommended and then we can’t be friends any more because I will realize you have terrible taste in books, 2) I don’t want to change out of my pajamas and strap on some shape wear let’s be honest and 3) I already have wine here and chocolate covered pretzels so I am ALL GOOD.

Here’s my summer reading list for your enjoyment (or not, but please don’t tell me). I have included the Amazon links but yo check out your local library cause they seriously just let you have that shit for FREEEEEEE!


This oldie but goodie never disappoints. Laugh until you pee a little (if like me you’ve had 4 ginormous human babies through natural childbirth and are too lazy to do kegels all day) and feel not so bad about yourself after. Jen is all of us.

 

This one is a page turner, I sacrificed sleep to finish it and I LOVE my sleep so you know it’s good. Also I love any book that is about the circus and or circus folk. I hang onto the little bit of heritage I have, where my circus folk at? Holla.

 

Ok where my cerebrals at? This is SUCH a good read, but bitch you gotta pay attention. You gotta focus your brain cells so no half asleep fluff reading, this is some next level shit. But worth it. If you’re not into paying that much attention, don’t watch the show based on this novel cause you won’t have one fucking clue what’s happening. Just ogle Ricky Whittle then.

 

I know I talk about this book all the time, but honestly I think Samantha Irby might be my spirit animal.  She like truly gets me, my love of trash food, my refusal to put on proper pants, my inability to balance a checkbook, everything.

 

Before there were whole television networks dedicated to keeping me entertained with murder mysteries and forensic investigations, there was my love of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I read all of their books when I was young and couldn’t get enough. I haven’t read this one yet, but it’s top of my summer wish list! I love the mysteries better than the supernatural stuff from Mr. King, I will let y’all know what I think.

Things I Love About Myself

If you don’t already have a self love list, I highly suggest you stop reading this and go make one. Refer to it as often as necessary because you’re an amazing Unicorn princess and you rock. Do not ever forget it. Here’s mine:

  1. I have very nice penmanship.
  2. I can drive a stick even in heels and/or flip flops.
  3. I am loyal as hell.
  4. I think I am a pretty good mama, I feel like I did my best.
  5. I can do long division by hand.

It’s finally the typical Cali weather here (June gloom came super early this year) and we are ready to hit the beach. I collaborated with my girl Megan to make a list of beach essentials so y’all can stock up for the months ahead.

 

  1. First off, my hat from the photo above and other similar ones with different adorable and cheeky sayings are available on my site here. They make the best instagram photos and honestly, that’s super important to any vacay or beach trip, no? Plus I guess sun protection blah blah blah. $18
  2. This amazing sun umbrella/beach tent sets up in just seconds and gives you and your little ones UPF 50+ protection. It opens to 8 ft wide so it’s big enough for the whole fam to be in the shade. $49.99
  3. Can’t hit the beach without an essential beach blanket. Requirements: must be easy to fold and carry and cute as hell. It’s water repellent and perfect for picnics and the ever popular movies at the park. Get it here for only $19.99.
  4. Beach bags are just part of Summer life, whether it’s the pool or the beach or a travel tote on vacay. But all these delicate bamboo handle bags girls are toting on every blog? Ummm… 5 seconds til a kid sits on that shit and breaks it plus I don’t like every mom at the pool being able to see all the random crap I carry around with me. So here, here and here (this one has free monogramming!!) are our recommendations for cheap and cute bags to haul your junk. $19.99- $49.99
  5. Can’t be in the sun without sunscreen. Everyone has their faves, but I personally HATE rubbing sunscreen on, I will always always choose a spray. And I need SPF gazillion since I am pale af.  Here is my go-to. $14.99
  6. If you’re into packing a lunch for yourself or the kiddos, you’ll need a lunch bag of some sort. Insulated and cute are the obvious requirements. (I personally find home made lunch really sad, I live for on the boardwalk corndogs and balboa bars, but that’s just me). Here and here are our two recommendations. $14.99 & $12.99.
  7. Sand toys are essential if you’re kids are little and will keep them entertained for hopefully more than 5 minutes. Here is the one Megan uses and loves. $9.99
  8. Definitely need to stay hydrated for a day in the sun. These BPA free mason jar style tumblers with straws are our new obsession. $14-$16

5 Beauty Essentials I Am Loving Right Now

I am not what anyone would call a “makeup person”. I legit don’t even know how to blow dry my own hair and would never in this lifetime be able to do a cat eye on myself. I didn’t even start wearing makeup until I was in my late 20’s so I am way behind the curve on this one. I have found some products that I think make my life a bit easier and from time to time I’ll share with you. Here’s a batch I’ve got on repeat currently.

 

  • Before we get started on my list, if you’re loving the makeup bag in my photo, it’s only $9 on the shop section of my blog. I’ve got several cute ones on there at the same price and if you throw a couple products in there, it makes a great gift.

 

  • Purlisse Tinted Sunscreen – this is such a no brainer, I love that it protects my face and gives me some coverage. Nobody wants to see all this blotchiness and this is just light and perfect when I’m running around or out for a walk and don’t want to be THAT full coverage bitch. You know the one, out hiking or in the gym with full makeup. Girl, no. It’s SPF 30 and I use “Light” because I am basically transparent. $35

 

  • Sisley Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream– This shit is pricey af but it lasts a long time, you don’t need much and I don’t use it every single day. Even if I am being the laziest girl at night and don’t feel like doing my whole routine, this saves me. I also bring it when I travel instead of toting a huge bag of all my skincare products. I have to thank Jeffree Star for turning me on to this little tub of unicorn magic. $195

 

  • L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara– this is the most amazing mascara and super affordable. Be aware that if it’s old, it starts clumping. So they aren’t joking with the whole “replace it every few months” thing. Nobody wants spider lashes. Well, I don’t know maybe that’s the look you’re going for? If so, I’ve got some old mascara you can have. $7.50

 

  • Buxom Full-On Lipstick– This is on the pricier end of things too (for a lipstick) but will totally last through a whole dinner party without reapplying or drying your lips out. Plus it won’t bleed and give you old lady lips like many others. I’m not as big a fan of their glosses, but this lipstick is everything. I looked for this recently on the Buxom site and couldn’t find it and Ulta’s website says limited stock so they may be discontinuing it. Commence ugly crying. $20

 

  • Dr. Pepper Bonne Bell Lip Smackers– I know, I know, I am not a twelve year old. But FOR REALS- this cute little lip balm stick hydrates, tastes good, smells good, and has the PERFECT hit of color. Want to look like the most super low maintenance, most woke-up-like-this bish? Whip out one of these babies and poof, you look fly as hell, but everybody will think you’re so easy going and “real”! They’re so cheap I keep on in each purse. Girl, you’re welcome. $2.50
