4th of July is not my holiday. It’s HOT, it’s mostly outside activities and I’m not an outside person. Mosquitoes, sunburn, heat stroke, melted ice cream, tourist traffic. No thanks. I’ll take chilled wine in a real glass in air conditioning please.
That being said, we are headed to a friends’ home this 4th of July for dinner and to watch the fireworks. Dressing for this particular holiday seems difficult, it’s one of two categories: day drunk sorority coed in a flag bikini and cutoff shorts doing red, white and blue jello shots OR matronly lady in khaki cargo shorts and a $5 flag tee from Old Navy. I don’t really identify with either of those scenarios. So how do you do an Independence Day look, but still have style? I asked my girl Megan Block, who always looks super adorable on the 4th for her favorite pieces right now. I figured if anyone can get me enthused about one of my least favorite holidays, it’s probably her.
First, we need to incorporate the traditional colors, so people know we are here to celebrate but in a completely non cheesy way. Don’t worry, you can totally do this from your closet at home without buying anything new. Unless you’re one of those chic urban types who only wears black, which in that case wear black and fuck all the 4th of July bullshit. You be you, girl.
If you’re a blondie like me (thanks to my colorist, hey Steven, wassup?) then red is probably a great color for you. Here are some of Megan’s favorite red pieces to inspire you to add that pop of color tomorrow. A red accent is enough, but if you’re feeling it go bold and rock a red dress or these adorable sailor style red pants.
