I’ve had gel on my fingernails for quite a while now, probably the last few years. Before that I just wore my nails manicured and buffed shiny or with regular polish. But I recently decided to give my nails a break from the gel and go back to traditional manicures. While I do that, I figured it was the perfect time for me to take on a quest that has long been my mission- the hunt for the perfect red nail color.
There’s nothing more classic than a perfectly manicured red nail. But… it has to be the PERFECT red. Not too orange, not too pink- that candy apple, Ferrari red with the right amount of shine and a decent thickness to the formula to give it some depth. So I am on the hunt and I thought I would share my findings with you guys in case, like me, you have been searching for that perfect red manicure as well. (Or pedicure- the perfect red toe is a hot summer accessory in sandals for sure)
First up, I will introduce you to the contenders: Chanel Longwear Nail Color in 510 Gitane, Dior Couture Colour Gel Shine and Long Wear Nail Color in 999 Rouge, CND Vinylux Weekly Polish in Wildfire, and Christian Loboutin Women’s Rouge in Classic Red. If you want to try any of these colors for yourself, just click the photo of the bottle and it’s a shoppable link!
CND VinyLux Weekly Polish in Wildfire
This is a great red, very classic color but for me the formulation was too thin. The first coat was not even opaque and I definitely needed a full two coats to get coverage. It also required a top coat for full glassy shine. This polish is affordable though and can be found anywhere, this link is for an Amazon prime option. The polish lasted about a week with minimal chipping only on the edges and I am a heavy typer and use my hands a lot. Not bad for $10.50 but not perfection.
Dior Couture Colour Gel Shine andLong Wear Nail Color
in 999 Rouge
This formula went on like a dream. The nail tech even commented on the quality and how nice the brush was to work with. One coat would have been enough but I went with two and my nails felt super luxurious. The shine! You don’t even need a top coat. You can totally feel the difference in quality on this formula and the red is so classic, so perfect. I did notice, however, that this polish chipped within a few days so even though the finish didn’t require a top coat, I would consider one that had chip resistance. Overall this is a real contender and comes in at $27.
Christian Louboutin Women’s Rouge Louboutin Nail Colour
in Classic Red
This polish bottle is SO extra. It barely fit in my purse! It would definitely make a statement on any cosmetics tray or in a display, but it’s size makes it kind of awkward to actually use. The nail tech applying my polish struggled with the long pointed tip and the angles made application difficult. I had high hopes for this polish based on it’s advertisement as long wear and chip resistant and it’s high price point, but it only lasted 3 days on my nails. The color and formula though was nice- a rich, classic red. At $50, I expected WAY more.
Chanel Beauty LE VERNIS Longwear Nail Colour
in Rouge Essential
This color and formula is as close to perfection as you can get- it looked too orange in the bottle, but went on a classic, perfect red. One coat was thick and fully opaque with complete coverage. A second coat felt luxe and glossy and more than enough. No peeling or chipping for nearly a week. At $28 and with the classic Chanel addition to your makeup vanity, this is a no brainer.
