So I saw that black seed oil was trending about a month ago in a TikTok video. As with all trending beauty products, I did my research to see what’s what. Turns out its name is apt — black seed oil is made from the tiny black seeds that grow on the Nigella sativa plant.
Even though you may not have heard of it yet, it’s actually been used for thousands of years, not just for healing properties but for things like baking as well. It’s known to have antioxidant properties and is said to help a lot of health conditions. Some benefits include reducing high blood pressure and cholesterol, helping reduce bloating and an upset stomach, and even decreasing asthma symptoms.
I have bad stomach problems (I always have) and a lot of the foods I eat cause pretty bad bloating. I eat relatively healthy and I work out a few times a week, but no matter what, by midday I’m pretty bloated and usually in something stretchy (and if I’m in jeans most likely my top button is undone). So I decided to order some and try it out.
I would take one in the morning when I woke up with a glass of water and then one before I went to bed. The first week I didn’t notice much of a difference with my bloating. The one thing I did notice was burping. Yeah, have you ever taken fish oil? You know the burp you get after that almost tastes like it? Yeah. That happens with black seed oil too.
By the second week I started noticing a difference; my bloating was almost cut in half of what it usually is by midday, and I just all around felt better. I noticed that not only my bloat but also the stomach pain I usually get after eating certain foods (that I probably shouldn’t be eating in the first place) was more eased.
Dairy is one of the big-ticket items for me, and I stay away from it for the most part. But there is something about cheese that gets me every time. I wouldn’t say I’m lactose intolerant, but it definitely makes me bloat — a little uncomfortable, but manageable. I noticed as I continued to take the black seed oil twice a day towards the end of the month, I felt amazing just all around. Dairy wasn’t giving my body its normal uncomfortable response, and my bloating was reduced quite a bit. No more unbuttoned jeans by 2pm. I can definitely say that I’m going to continue to integrate it into my daily routine!
